About Us:

Marine Survey Group was established to service the Great Lakes area in May 2006 by Stewart D. Hobbs and Stan A. Janak. We are both 1997 graduates from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation. Each have held U.S. Merchant Marine Officer License (ocean vessels, unlimited tonnage) with related certifications, and have served as officers in the U.S. Naval Reserve (Merchant Marine Individual Ready Reserve Group). Stan Janak served as a member of the National Association of Marine Surveyors, Inc. (2007 - 2012).

We incorporated Marine Survey Group in April 2008. In April 2009, we expanded to Houston, Texas where we have opened operations for the Gulf Coast region. Mr. Kenneth R. Peterson, Mr. Adam C. Wilson, and Mr. Fisher C. Scarborough are part of our surveying staff at our Houston location. Mr. Robert M. Jackson is our surveyor in the eastern Great Lakes region, and Mr. Graham Guzzi and Mr. Chris Richardson are our surveyors in the western Great Lakes region.

As marine surveyors, we have handled thousands of survey assignments, primarily on behalf of cargo importers and underwriters in the steel trade. However, we have also been involved in other cargo shipments including project cargoes, machinery, household goods, marble, granite, chemicals, and food products, to name a few. Also, we have gained considerable knowledge in mill related issues and imperfections of steel products. Cargo Discharge, Damage, Loading, Project, and Securing type surveys have taken us all over the United States, as well as, some foreign locations such as Bahamas, China, Colombia, Germany, Mexico, Panama, and Russia. Moreover, we have testified in litigation actions regarding subrogation efforts on behalf of cargo interests, and on the extent and causes of cargo damage.

Our primary goal is customer satisfaction. We continuously strive to attain this goal by surveying ships and cargo with vigilance, attention to detail, and by always delivering competent, expert reports with the utmost punctuality. We hope to service your account to help mitigate cargo damages and facilitate your damage claim process by utilizing our background and professional experience in the maritime and marine survey industries.

Please let us know if we can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,
